growing up in ....
A year ago, around this time,I unintendedly found a column in Majalah Anis, about a review of a travelogue book entitled Hikmah yang Tersirat.Thought that it may look usual, maybe the for-parents-or-lengthy novel that only typical girls would read ( I would rather branding myself as a pretty different, not your next-door-girl type),I would just skipped the pages.
Then, one day,(out of sudden),I was merely killed by boredom and this has lead me to read that review once again.Beautiful portrayal of a happy family : two young parents and their two beautiful daughters.Everything seems so perfect until I read the last line that states the young husband has died due to a car crash near his hometown, not in a middle of war place that used to be his workplace.Anticipated, adrenaline rush, ice cream rush or even chocolate rush flood my whole bloodstreams, this is something!
He is Nafastari,a young diplomat from Trengganu, who wrote so much about his life in Pakistan in his blog (some sort of travelogue I would say),has surname Wan (a typical Trengganu),and his journey before he left this world.A really heart-touching story, leaving me sobbing for quite a long time.Maybe it is because of his story,or maybe because of his precious moments and notes he left for his wife, daughters and family.
I can relate much to my life. That's the point.Living in Trengganu, the culture, the way we see the world as it is.Perspective.
Then, recently I found out Awang Goneng's blog,( Growing in Terengganu),a very close-to-heart experience.I remembered recognising his names from the book that I used to see on the book shelves when I was in a honeymoon state with the books during my secondary days. That signifies 7 years have passed,(Oh my,I'm old already). He,somehow reminds me of my relatives in Kuala Terengganu,Setiu and Besut.A typical Terengganu may have all that features I bet.The Yunnan ancestry,a Dutch-blooded great-grandfather (migration),chinese-siamese ancestors, and those stories related to it.The 'Wan','Che' surname, the history behind it,the salasilah or family tree reconstruction, all those bloodlines and the culture we shared.
The sepupu(cousin),dua pupu, tiga pupu, empat pupu. Not to mention, the relatives who are marrying the relatives, seriously the ties that connect us has really twinned and it's need to be discovered really carefully.I guess I've inherited this from my grandparents of both sides. The stories, the names.
'Ni sape?'
'Ni anak che da,duduk kapung bla bla bla, dekat serada, adik dia nikoh dengan bla bla bla'
'ho ni hok belajar dengan si .....,pastu la ni keje ngan .....'
the endless conversation
Ok back to the writers'.Sincerely,I'm not really good in English, with all those bombastic words,haha.Grammar?sigh.But we need that passion right :)
Thanks to Sir Wan Omar,Ms Lee Sian Soo,Ms Rebecca Hartwell,Mr leonard Salter and more teachers.Too much credit to be given.
I will tell you more about them in the next entry,k?
Maybe this is the best time to spark the interest once again.
'Of Bunga Telur and Dally shoes, fellas?'
Thanks to the names mentioned above. If I can conduct an Oscar or only a simple kelat nise giving ceremony, their names will be in the list.
Sure!
